underground coal fire, just like in silent hill.
centralia, pa was a small coal mining town - until one day in 1962 some workers at a landfill (which was in an old mine) accidentally set fire to some highly-flammable anthricite coal while burning excess trash in the landfill. although they attempted to put the fire out, the coal still continued to burn underground. over time, nearly the entire town was evacuated and relocated, although a few crazy die-hards have stuck around. this reminded me exactly of silent hill:
