this is retarded. everyone and their sister knows that the smashing pumpkins have gotten back together and they are playing rediculously sold-out shows in asheville and san francisco.

but not too many people seem to be talking about how they are fucking over *both* their fans and the independent music stores at the same time.

apparently they are releasing several versions of their cd, each with an exclusive song, and the exclusive song varies based on where you bought the cd:

best buy: death from above

target: zeitgeist (the title song of the album)

itunes: stellar (also comes with a bunch of covers by shitty bands! the bravery! panic at the disco! test your reflex! and +44!)

all other retailers: …

thats right, if you buy from best buy, target, or itunes, you get one or more bonus tracks. if you go down to your local indie reseller, or even just to the shitty music store in the mall, well fuck off. no ‘bonus’ song for you.

this is the sort of reason why the best record store in dc quit selling major label releases. the big resellers (target, best buy, etc) are actually selling the cds for less than what the distributors sell them for. let me clarify, lets say target sells a cd for 9 dollars. if bill at crooked beat tries to get the same cd from his distributors, they want 11. there is no way to compete. and this time, they are charging more and giving less songs.
