about digitaldefection.net
this site has been around for around 5 years now. it got its start sometime in 2001, as a way for me to pass the time while unemployed. i had a digital camera and took lots of pictures at lots of shows and wanted a place to show the really good ones off. after awhile i had bigger plans for the site, like giving free webspace to local bands, serving mp3s and so on, and some of that happened (record reviews and articles and whatnot, as well as a few mp3s). after i attained regular employment once again there wasnt much time for managing a community-style website, so the site went into disuse and disrepair.
so now i am giving it a rebirth. the site’s primary purpose will still be to showcase my photography. but now the site is going to have another motive…
a vote.
you see, the internet is a sort of democracy, thanks to some of the underlying technology that runs it. being that this is a blog running the wordpress software, anything i write will automatically be shared with others in the ‘blogosphere’ (whatever the hell that means), giving my thoughts an immediate venue in which to be heard. in addition, there is a technology called ‘pagerank’ that was created by google. essentially, when you search for a keyword on google, the resulting sites are ordered by their ‘relevance’ a large part of which is determined by the number of sites that link to it.
for instance… lets say i create a website that sells widgets. if i can get a whole lot of websites to link to me, my pagerank will go up. if i can get sites that have a high pagerank to link to my site, that will boost it even higher. in addition, if someone links to me with the terms ‘best widgets’. and someone searches for ‘best widgets’, they will be presented with my site, even though my site might not have the words ‘best widgets’ anywhere on it. to illustrate this phenomenae, go to google and search for ‘miserable failure’ and see what is returned.
basically, if i find a site or idea interesting or a product good or bad, i will write about it on this site. even if noone ever reads my description of the site, it will affect their pagerank and i will vote them up on google.
long winded, i know. so read the site often if you like. ill try to update it often, although past experiences have shown that that probably won’t happen.
